Solved Battery plugged in, charging but not showing charge progress

Specs: Windows 7, 1.66 core 2 duo / 2Gb
i have a fairly old ibm lenovo r61 which has recently started giving a strange error. when i plug it in, it says its plugged in and charging, but no matter if i change the charger or even the battery (i tried, got another of its kind here at home); the battery percentage is not increasing.

it was recently at 1% battery and constantly blinking its loww battery orange light, when i decided to see just what would happen if i disconnected. the battery gave me the same backup as before while continously flashing 1% before finally going into hibernation. when started with charger again, its now showing 100% an fully charged suddenly.

is this a problem with my operating system or something else?

Batteries do not last forever. This one sounds like the battery is nearing the very end of its life. Get a new one.

Yeah, likely it's the battery but if not the charger may be at fault. Is it making a good connection? Sometimes constant twisting of the charger plug causes it's wires to break inside the insulation. Or sometimes the solder joints on the charging jack inside the laptop will break.

If you have changed the battery with a new one and still no charging, the charging-circuit inside the laptop could be damaged.
Or laptop-battery contacts are corroded/dirty....
