Battery meter failures

Zenith / Z-star 900

Specs: windows 95/98/98se, pentium 166mhz
I own a Zenith z-star 900. I have formatted the hard disk and installed windows 95b. I have noticed that no battery information was available, even though the battery pack is completely operative (2h battery life). I installed windows 98 to see if this could fix the problem, as I am unable to keep an eye on the remaining amount of battery energy, but nothing happened. I installed windows 98se as well , and then I noticed that no battery driver existed in the device manager....???, the battery meter says that no battery is present even when the laptop is working in battery energy??? What can I do ? Windows 98 battery pack drivers?
I have to mention that this laptop was not mine, so I do not know how the previous user could handle that...

It could be the battery has been changed at some point and is not a genuine "original equipment" battery supplied by Zenith. There is often a temptation to save some money and buy a cheaper "copy" from a third-party.

problem is, these copies don't have the same circuitry as the genuine ones (which is why they are cheaper) so the laptop and Windows cannot detect it properly even though it works.

Is there a specified software designed in order to count the power remaining in these kind of batteries? If yes please send me details...
