Is there a UPS (battery backup)that can shut Windows down properly if you are not at home and your power goes out. I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this one. A friend of mine says that he has heard from one of the IT techs at his work told him that there is one that could perform that operation. All replies are greatly respected and appreciated.

Most UPS for the consumer market will do this, it is a common function. Without it the UPS would be pretty useless as the battery is only designed to provide power for a few minutes.

The UPS connects to the computer either by RS232 serial or USB. Software on the computer monitors the UPS and in the event of a power failure will automatically shut the computer down, usually after a few minutes delay as some power cuts are only very short lived.
