Base system hardware found message

August 12, 2014 at 21:11:46
Specs: Windows XP, 2gb
At start up, I get a message that new hardware has been noticed - base system.
Then an installation wizard opens.
It asks me to insert the installation cd. But I don't have such an item. So I cancel, and then I get a message that my hardware might not be working correctly.
Is this a worry ?

Are you by chance trying to boot from a hard disk that came from a different computer?

Have a look in Device Manager and see if there are any errors showing (usually yellow or red icons). If there are let us know what device they refer to.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

StuartS - hard drive came with this computer.
Derek - I've found that there are two yellow question marks next to "Base System Device".

Too hopeful I expect but from Device Manager Uninstall the error items. Shut down and disconnect from domestic power (remove battery too if a laptop). Hold the Power Off/On button in for about 20 seconds. Put the computer back to normal and restart it.

If that doesn't help then let us have the make and model number of the computer. Whoever feels able to take this further will probably need that information. It would also be interesting to know if this just suddenly happened out of the blue or after you did something.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I've performed that exercise, Derek, but nothing has changed.
The laptop is a Lenovo, product I.D. = 444622M.
This problem started out of the blue apprx a month or so ago.

A few sites I checked said that was the card reader although I suppose 'base system device' could refer to just about anything. But check the support page for your model and OS and go ahead and try installing their card reader driver. Even if that's not it, it won't hurt anything to reinstall the driver.

Don't forget to preorder your Hatch green chili for this fall. Many vendors ship world-wide.
