backup drive keeps filling up.

Dell INSPIRON 1525

Specs: Windows Vista, 3.00 gigs
My recovery backup drive says I've used 5 gigs but when I open it and count how many gigs the files contain it doesn't come near to 5 gigs. will a defrag or disk clean up help. Also will defrag or disk clean up delete pictures or programs that I don't want to lose, or should I back them up on something before defrag or disk clean up.

Disable System Restore. It takes up lots of space by saving settings so it can be accessed later.
