Automatic restart issues

March 21, 2009 at 07:03:42
Specs: Windows XP SP2
My computer restarts anytime I try to run Disk Defragmenter or Disk Cleanup. For the Disk Cleanup it will assess how much space I can save, but then when I try to run the program, it restarts the computer. Same thing with defrag. I ran a system scan and found no viruses, worms, trojans etc. Any idea what is going on? Could it be a motherboard or other hardware problem?

I think you better run chkdsk /F and maybe chkdsk /R..

Run chkdsk /R. It will do a surface check of the entire drive. It will take hours for a large disk, so pick a time when you don't normally use the system. Maybe overnight.

If it finds any bad sectors, it might fix(?) them by assigning alternates. But it's not a good sign when bad sectors start showing up. You should make sure that all your backups are up to date, and consider purchasing a replacement hard drive.

I had two bad sectors show up that were fixed. I kind of figured it was a hardware issue, so it's not a surprise that's probably what is going on. Thanks for everyone's help.

You're welcome. I advise keeping a close eye on that drive. It would be a good idea to run chkdsk /R occasionally. It any more bad sectors show up, you should replace the drive.
