Solved Ati radeon not working

May 31, 2012 at 11:58:47
Specs: Linux i686), 3.86Quad/8GB
Hello, I recently moved to vietnam and brought my Computer along with me. it is a 3.86ghz Quad-Core with 8GB ram 500W Power supply 2 500GB HDD set up in RAID and an ATI Radeon 6770 graphics card. I packed it extremly well with the proper bags to avoid static and excess padding. Everything arrived intact and works except for the V-Card. I can run the computer with the monitor attached to the motherboard regardless of whether the V-Card is inserted or not. The fan of the V-Card runs fine when the 6pin connector is clipped in. My next step that I was going to try is to bake it in the oven at 190C for 20min but I am weary of doing this as it sounds like a last resort. I should also mention I am using a VGA-DVI conversion cube since I could only find a monitor with a VGA connection here in Vietnam. Is there anything else I can try? I run Linux Ubuntu 12.08 and I really need the processing power of the 6770 for my work and I would hate to have to buy another card. Any help will be appreciated

"single beep"
Do u hear the same beep(single beep) when the vga cable is connected to the motherboard(onboard video)?

If video card is installed then the onboard video will be disabled automatic(not entirely true). This indicates that the video card isn't detected by the system. Are u sure it is well connected to PCIe x16 slot?

All i need is the system model number which is DELL STUDIO 540 the rest of info is useless.

Your v-card isn't detected at all. It works like this,
If u install a v-card(it doesn't matter if it works or not) the onboard video will be disabled. The fact that u can still see a picture on onboard video while v-card is connected means there's no connection between v-card and board. Are u sure v-card is well connected to PCIe x16 slot?

I don't know if I missed this, but have you tried to remove the video card and re-install it to make sure that it is making good contact with the PCIe slot?

UPDATE *****************************************************
Re-installed video card drivers just for fun and then pushed the V-card really hard into the slot after cleaning both with compressed air.... Now it disables the on board graphics of the mother board when the 6 pin connector is plugged in but I still can't get the VGA monitor to detect it.

Don't push it too hard. Video drivers works only in OS environment, doesn't work in post or Bios.

Did u hear single beep(post beep) after cleaning the system with v-card installed?

Remove the board from the case, clear CMOS and install the v-card.

hmmm so could my problem be that I have been trying it with a machine that first hard a corrupted version of windows and now has Ubuntu which may not enable the driver until I can turn it on after it is detected?

Corrupted windows or OS can't kill or damage the video card. Drivers can kill and damage the video. The problem isn't a driver as i said earlier drivers only works in OS environment.

U didn't answer my question and try my suggestion in response #6.

Single beep means computer is working with no issues. DVI to VGA adapter sometimes they don't work well try another monitor. Are u sure there is no DVI monitor in Vietnam? DVI has been around for a long time now.
