Specs: Windows 7
I have a laptop with a AMD Turion II Dual-Core Mobile Processor M520 2.3GHZ.
Is 2.3GHZ the total speed of the CPU or is it the speed of each core?

Each core. You don't have 2 1.15Ghz cores that add up to 2.3Ghz nor do you have 2 2.3Ghz cores that add up to 4.6Ghz.

Well, in some ways you do really have a 4.6ghz processor. A well written application on a fully smp system would tend to be faster that it's 2.3ghz speed on single but in real world tests it tends to be about 3.3 ghz equivalent single core speed. A rare instance might bring a singe core speed test almost 4.6 speed single core.

The true dual cores help in some cases to process multiple tasks a bit better. Things like a network transfer and a photoshop application may work much better to the user on a dual or tri, quad or hex core.
