Hi all.

I'm wanting to know if the 6850 and 6870 are "the same" Graphics card, just with different clock speeds?

I ask because I currently have the 6850, which I have overclocked to the 6870 speeds and, if they are in fact the "same card", I will be more confident in modding the BIOS with the new clocks.

Appreciated as always.

No, they are not the same. The HD 6850 has 960 Stream Processors & 48 Texture Units, the HD 6870 has 1120 Stream Processors & 56 Texture Units. All you needed to do was compare the specs.

I've just found that out whilst searching Mick but thanks for taking the time to reply.

My interest is with the clock speeds. By default mine runs at 820/1100 and the 6870 at 920/1120. I currently have mine at the latter speeds via software O/C and all appears well. Do you think I'd be ok setting these speeds in a BIOS mod?

Thanks.

Software overclocking has it's advantages. Can you setup different profiles: underclocked - default - overclocked? You don't need your card screaming away when you're surfing the internet or doing other lightweight tasks. Which program are you using?

Hello again Mick.

I am currently using MSI Afterburner to overclock. It's now running at 975/1150 on default Voltage, stressed for 20 minutes and no problems. I dare not push it any further lol.

The AMD PowerPlay feature means my card clocks are at 300/300 when not in use so it's only O/C'd when gaming etc. This PowerPlay feature makes BIOS moddig somewhat tricky so I think I'll take your advice and stick with software for now. The only problem I have is that the settings arn't correctly applied after a restart but I'm sure I'll find a way around it.

Once again, thank you for your time.
