AOC 27-inch monitor going blank every couple of hours or so?

January 18, 2016 at 12:39:58
Specs: Linux x86_64
I have a fairly new AOC 27" Monitor, (09/2015) It suddenly started going to blank screen and does disply, "no signal". So I swapped out a video card with another I have and thought they may have been the problem until today when it blanked on me again with "no signal". Today I simply turned off the monitor for a few seconds and then back on, everything is fine. Ooops, at least I have a good video card. Just last week I purchased an IO Gear 2 port HDMI/USB KVM switch. So I unplugged that today too. Back to waiting to see if it blanks and "no signal" again. Please let me know any ideas or suggestions, thanks.

Usually when it says "no signal" it is a good sign that the monitor itself is working. So it could be its cable or connections otherwise the problem is elsewhere.

Difficult to be 100% without either trying a different monitor (best) or using yours for long enough on another computer. The latter is tricky with intermittent faults because you can't be certain how long to give it before you assume anything.

Thanks for the advice. I really don't want to have to send the monitor back! Fortunately I'm blessed with enough hardware to do the testing. It did seem to coincide with the KVM switch, so I'm letting it rock without that for now to see. Thanks again!

Could the power settings in your OS be blanking the monitor after a period of idling?

Thanks for the suggestions but I've checked everything out that I can think of. This machine has been running Ubuntu 14.04.03 for months now and the thing with the monitor just started about a week ago.

Since I removed the KVM switch yesterday, the only time it blanked was in Win10, (gotta have my turbotax), and of course with Win anything can happen. And I was mistaken, the monitor does not display "no-signal, it shows "HDMI" when I turn it back on.

Thanks for the help.

Just to add that if the monitor shows HDMI then it still gives confidence it is working.

Seems it is either W10 or a computer hardware fault. Check out DAVEINCAPS idea at #3 too.

Another possibility is a graphics driver mismatch with W10 so check with the manufacturers to see if there is a later one. A quick check would be to go into Device Manager an use the Update feature there.

Just an update: Since taking the IO Gear KVM switch out of the loop I have not experienced any "screen blanking". I'll give it a couple of more days before I decide to send it back and try to get another.

Thanks for the help.
