Specs: Windows 7, 250GB
I have aWestern Digital Hard Drive, external, on which the USB lead that is physically attached via four small tacs, has come off the board. Is there any way to plug it into something to continue its use?

If by 'tacs' you mean 'solder joints' then it can be resoldered. Or you can probably put it in a different external case.

Ill be onest, I really dont know much about this stuff. Yes, solder points. do you have any recommended cases? And will it work without having that USB piece attached.

I'm assuming the 'usb piece' is part of the enclosure. But you may want to post back the model number of the enclosure.

I don't have any recommendations. I think they're all pretty much the same. The USB cable will either come attached as is your present one or the cable will be separate and simply plug into the enclosure. (That's probably the best type.) Well you need to determine beforehand if the drive is a 2.5" or 3.5" as the enclosures are different.

Soldering the old one wouildn't be a problem for someone with a soldering iron. They'd just need to make sure they soldered the wires to their original places.

If the solder came loose due to overheating then next time select a roomier enclosure with a cooling fan. Look at the link below for some examples.

You didn't indicate if the hard drive is 2.5" or 3.5", SATA or IDE. That make all the difference when selecting an enclosure.

I really have no idea what was just said....The only thing on here that I could locate that could be a model number is WD2500BEVT. Its a WD Scorpio 250 GB. I think its a 2.5". The cable is actually just a USB 2.0 adapter that plugs directly in, but the piece that it goes into on the hard drive has broken off of thesmall board that plugs into the hard drive itself.

Looks like it's a 2.5" SATA so you'd need an enclosure designed for such a drive if you're looking to buy a new one.

Just to make sure of the damage to the one you have now; it's not the circuit board that's part of the drive but rather a piece that connects to the drive?

You might check ebay for something compatible or OtheHill's newegg link.
