After 1GB RAM upgrade only 32MB RAM are seen

Specs: N/A
After upgrading my 512MB RAM with a 1GB/333MHz DIMM, the computer stopped seen the whole memory, exept 32MB.
I tried both 1GB and 512MB DIMM and only the new 1GB DIMM, Memtest sees only 32MB. Although the 1GB DIMM is marked as "DDR-1-1GB-333MHz" (which I believe is PC2700, just like the old 512MB DIMM) SIW reports it as "PC3200-200MHz". When I put back the 512MB DIMM the system runs fine. (WindowsXP and Ubuntu 10.04). Pls Help
Specs: Pentium4@2.4 GHz (Northwood), FSB 532MHz, Intel 845 Chipset.

What is the make/model of your motherboard? How many memory slots are there? I'm sure there's more than one, so why are you removing the 512MB stick when you install the 1GB? Are you sure the board supports 1GB per slot?

The mobo model is i845PE-W83627, manufacturer uknown. There are two memory slots and I tried all combinations of 1GB and 512MB DIMM (1GB + 512MB, 1GB only and 512MB only) to make sure there are no conflicts. Only the original (512 MB only) configuration works. The mobo supports 1GB per slot. The crucial test confirmed the above. I will probably return the DIMM for test. All help is welcome.

How do I know if my computer supports High Density memory? The new 1GB DIMM is a HD one. Could it be the cause of my problem?
