acer laptop screen broken, external monitor?

Specs: Windows 7
acer aspire 5920 laptop monitor broken

my laptop screen has given up today. when i switch it on, the left half of the screen is white with some coloured lines on it and the right half of the screen is jet black.
i have an external monitor and a hdtv, both of which i would be happy to use as a monitor for the laptop. (i only ever use it sat by these anyway).
i've done some research online, and have found you are supposed to press FN and F6 to manually swap monitors. this is not working however, the keyboard definitely works.

i know it is working properly in the background. it starts up as normal (but a black/white split screen). then when the hard drive light has stopped, i know it's waiting for my windows log on password. when i type this and press enter, it then carries on as normal (but a black/white split screen). so i would say the laptop is working fine, apart from the screen is completely knackered. can't go into bios or anything as i'd have to do it blind.

so how can i get the external monitor or tv to work with the laptop? both the tv and monitor are recognising that the laptop is plugged in. the tv displays 'no signal' when the laptop isn't plugged into it, and the monitor displays a colour test screen when the laptop is not plugged into it.

any replies much appreciated!

With the TV connected, you need to go into Display Properties in Control Panel and set the external monitor as the default display device (ie so it shows as "Monitor 1" instead of 'monitor 2'.

I can't be more specific because my Win7 PC is not a laptop with an external monitor port, hence my PC does not have those settings.

hi, thanks for the reply.
i can't do anything like that because the laptop screen is totally broken. when it boots up i can't see anything, the screen goes half white / half black as soon as i power on.

i'm thinking maybe the built in graphics card has gone? before the screen on the laptop broke, when you plugged in the tv via hdml or the monitor via the spare monitor port, you would straight away see the desktop on the 2nd screen as well as the laptop screen. now it doesn't do that.

could that signal it's the actual graphics card that has gone?

I liked this reply I found, - enter your pass word so that the desk top opens, - move mouse to about where you think a space in the screen might be, - right click, - press down button six times. - press right button twice, - press enter. You should have at the end of this changed from laptop monitor to external monitor blindly.
