how did you try system restore, if it will not boot to vista.
if you can download this and create a bootable cd

boot from it, locate your files and drag them to a flash or external drive.

Hi thank you for your reply

when you turn it on it asks for which keyboard (I choose US) and then now it just goes straight into startup repair which i previously selectd from the only other screen that comes up is the system recovery tools (again it all looks like it is in safe mode because of the large arrow) I just have a blank blue backscreen. Whe I first bought the lap top i was asked to make a recovery disk which I have. I cant do anything withthe laptop except to get into cprompt via the system recovery options screen it gives me. I cant get wifi or any normal screen. I guess I will have to download it from a different pc and burn a disk from there? How do I boot from it? I have put in my recovery disks and it does not recognise or use them, but of course before it use it I want to get my files off.
Hope this helps, many thanks

you need to enter the bios and set the cd as the first boot device.
