My Acer Aspire 5810TZ-4657 would not boot (very recently) and hung up at the screen where you can choose F2 or F12 (neither yielded any result). I expected an error message to the effect that no disk was available but there was none. I removed the hard drive and booted up a rescue disk (no problems). I tried this same sequence (including reinserting the hard drive) several times, and decided that the hard drive was bad. A new hard drive solved the problem.
I was not sure (when I wrote the above "question"), whether or not I had missed something in the POST hang up, i.e. whether some combination such as Fn + F1 would have made a difference so that the program would get through POST.
