4670 and 9600 at 512mb

Specs: Windows XP
Hello.
I got a choice to make between 2 gpu's, they
are the Radeon 4670 and the Geforce 9600gt,
both the 512mb version. Which one will be
better? i am a heavy gamer and i just need a
cheapo gpu for my new build until next year
somewhere in the middle of the year, i will get
a much better card with directx 11 support and
most likely xfire it.

rest of system specs:
Phenom x2 550 BE
Asus M4A79XTD EVO
Antec TP-550, 550w PSU (is this good enough for xfire?)
2gig DDR3 1333Mhz Apacer Ram
coolermaster Gladiator case (will this be big
enough to run a xfire set up?)

Resolution i play at currently is only 1280
by 1024, planning on getting a 19 - 22 inch lcd
monitor same time next year when i get a new
card.I play all the new games that come out, like
assassins creed 2, cod4 2, ect, and like the
eye candy. Any other recommendations welcome.

Pretty much a toss up for performance; the 9600GT usually does a little better in benchmarks and the HD 4670 a little better in most actual games.

The HD 4670 should be the easiest to resell later on; they'll run on most anything.

Yeah, if u plan to buy another good gaming card next year go 4 hd 4670. Between hd 4670 and 9600gt, hd 4670 has a lot of advantage one them no additional power required(i have seen this card run 250w psu). I think u can still play modern games like cod4 in 1280x1024.

edit.. I think the psu is fine(four +12v rails each rail has 20A) next time don't buy psu with multiple rails look for single +12v rail with high amps eg. +12v@60A

if u want more peformance u can overclock hd 4670 and peform like 9600gt.

" u can overclock hd 4670 and peform like 9600gt"

I don't think so--not without upgrading the cooler anyway. The 9600GT is a good bit faster than the 4670.

Another option would be the GeForce GT 240. This card performs like a 9600GT without needing any auxilliary power. Best of both worlds.

"The 9600GT is a good bit faster than the 4670."

Where do you get that information jackbomb?

This might be worth a read...

I won't argue the 9600GT isn't faster in many tests but I will argue whether it's faster by very much.

It's a GT 240 review, but the 9600GT and HD4670 are also tested.

Thanks for the posts and quick response (sorry mine took so
long). Constant internet issues xD

Just out of pure interest, whats the Radeon 4650 performance?
And is it better than, say a Geforce 7800? Is the 4670 which you
guys suggest i should get over the 9600 better than a 7800 as
well?

thanks again.

4670 is better than 7800,4650. Since hd 4670 is gaming card and its cheap we recomend u to buy it.It will play modern games in medium or high settings in 1280x1024. There is small difference parfomance btw 4670 and 9600 that's why i said u can overclock hd 4670.

Use the chart on the following page as a guide to compare performance. And since you've asked about the HD 4650, watch for the memory type...some use slower GDDR2 , others use faster GDDR3. Stay away from the cards with GDDR2.
