2 PC's crash on startup, new in this house.

August 8, 2011 at 11:42:39
Specs: WINXP, 2GB
I have recently moved property and on moving in, my pc now re-starts wwen i try to start up. I would have thought this a PC problem, am running WinXP, it goes back to the, "there has been a problem", open safe, or last good configuration, basically, the 30 secs to restart screen.. I have a laptop which works fine, and so does others in the new house, but my girlriends PC does exactly the same as mine. Could it be the electrics are too poor to run a PC in this flat & need updating? As find it unusual we are having no problems with the laptops, but the PC's will not stay on for more than 5 mins without re-booting themselves. Thanks in advance for any answers..

Does it work when booting into Safe Mode?

No, it re-starts again, as does the other pc also, but straight away now, where as mine mat stay on for a few mins before re-starting. Both worked fine before moving here. The lights tripped once, and once only also when re-starting. Which was making me think it may be an electrical fault in the house and not the pc's.

Have you tried plugging in the computers into a different power plug?

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Yes, I tried using extension cables from all the other rooms in the flat. No difference.

Yes, tried it with & without.

Mrs moved in here in March, it did this to her PC then, i moved in 2 weeks ago, and it did exactly the same to mine basically.

If both PCs worked fine at the old place, here is a test I want you to try:
1. Turn on the PC, and on the company logo screen, press F2. A screen letting you configure things should appear. If not, try the other F keys and try pressing delete. Once you get into the screen, leave the computer at idle. Does the computer ever restart?

Sounds more like something may have happened during the move. However, it'd probably be a good idea to get an AC line tester from someplace like radio shack. That way you'll at least know if the wall plugs are wired correctly.

YES!!! just get one of those plug in circuit testers that has the red, yellow, green lights on it. You probably have at least a bad ground, but you may even have a reverse polarity issue (I know it's AC). You have a hot, a neutral, and a ground, if the hot and neutral are reversed the laptop charger with 2 prongs may not care, but your power supply on your computer does care. It is causing all kinds of problems internally BUT more importantly it can cause an unsafe condition in the house, shock hazard, and possibly a fire in the long term. Use the tester in multiple rooms to be sure if the issue is just an outlet or two that was changed by an amateur and can easily be fixed with the breakers turned off (black wire to the brass screw and white wire to the silver screw and the green ground to the green screw) or if the problem goes deeper and the entire house needs to be looked at by a licensed electrician (clearly the best solution here).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

You may also want to look into getting a line conditioner or online UPS.
