Gateway Gateway performance 500

Specs: Windows XP, Intel 500, 384 Ram
My 1999 Gateway Performance 500 M now has 384 RAM (3x128 100 MHz SDRAM) and I would like to upgrade it to 768. The Gateway Configuration order indicates it is expandable to 768MB, but there are various posts on the Net which indicate that 384 is the maximum for this machine. Does anybody know if I could install 3x256 RAM? Many thanks. Lil

According to crucial.com, 384MB is the maximum for this machine. Good site, and good reply from yourself. Thanks again.

Time to retire that old relic. It's not a WinXP machine.

If the chipset is the Intel 440BX, then it will handle 768MB of RAM. You just need to make sure that each of the 256MB sticks you purchase are low-density (16 chip) modules. High density RAM with only 8 chips on the module will not work.
