Specs: Windows 7 home premium
just bought a toshiba Satellite L650 laptop. when i checked the system properties it says: installed memory 4.00GB then in brackets it says (2.99GB usable) ? is that normal? what happened to the other 1 gig? i know a little bit about computers, could it be coz the video card memory is taking up the 1 gig? coz i know that the video card is 1 gig? how do i fix this so 4GB is usable?

If you have the 32-bit version of Win7, only 3.0-3.5GB RAM is useable by the system. Here's an explanation:

yes i checked it is windows 7 32bit home premium. im pretty sure when i installed it i choose 64bit. how to change from 32bit to 64bit? im only using my computer for internet and dvd burning... i read on google that the only real advantage for 64bit is that is can handle more ram?

In order to switch over to 64-bit Windows, you would need to do a fresh install of Windows. A 64-bit OS is not inherently faster than 32-bit, but it does allow the OS to use more RAM. Also, 64-bit applications can use more RAM at once than a 32-bit app. For your purposes, it might be more trouble than it is worth to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit because you would essentially have to start over with your system: back up your data, reinstall Windows, reinstall all your apps, restore your data.
