I loved to play Age of Empires II: Age of Kings on my old Gateway. The game was fast and enjoyable, and as of now, I'm playing FreeCiv--a slow, miserable experience. :) Now that I've got a netbook, Ages ends in an error when generating the map, and Rise of Nations does not support my video card. I *really* miss being able to play games like these.
Does anyone know of any game comparable to Age of Empires for Windows XP or even an earlier version?
Try AoE III. There are at least 3 demos out there to download. Skip

Thanks very much for responding and for your recommendation! Problem is, my computer does not support the graphics card configuration. I need a game similar to Ages, but without the intense requirements. Ages III has stalled a computer with 128 MB of memory on the card--I've personally seen that.
This is straight from Age of Empires III requirements, and I quote:
"64 MB video card with support for hardware transformation and lighting required"
My little netbook, I don't think, has that much memory on its little Intel 945 Mobile chipset.
Sounds like you prefer to give up without downloading and trying to find something that'll work for you. No guarantees but here's what Intel has to say...

I can install Ages III on this computer, then I can best respond to your statement: "Sounds like you prefer to give up without downloading and trying to find something that'll work for you." Thanks for all your help and recommendations so far.
Thank you so much!!!!! Age of Empires III runs indeed! To solve the display problems under III, I switched the color down to 16-bit and things worked perfectly!
Sorry for my griping about it. Thanks, again!
All three demos will keep you entertained for weeks. Enjoy. Skip
