Hi all, for some reason steam will not allow me to launch my game (half life2). When i click on the hl2.exe and log into my steam account i keep getting the message and link saying i need to download the latest directx(r) from the microsoft website. However i already have directx 9.0c installed when half-life2 only needs directx 9.0b (which comes with the game). I've tried to contact steam but its been days since ive heard back from them. Does anyone know what to do to overcome this. Cheers
Software DX version doesn't really matter much if your hardware only supports DX7. Before HL2 became so integrated with steam, the user could edit a file and have HL2 run in DX 7, or 6.1 mode, but I don't remember how to do this since that was years ago.

What i dont understand is that i had no problem getting it to run a few months back, ive just never come across this message before. Its almost like you buy a game from steam and within a few years it becomes useless!!! Im starting to see why people try to get illegal copies of this game.
Anyways does anyone have any other ideas to get this game up and running.Cheers
Pfff.. that's nothing. Steam doesn't protect it's users accounts from brute force attacks, so anyone can crack almost any account in less than 24 hours, steal your steam account, and play as you. Happened to me and the SOB got my account VAC banned, and as everyone knows, Valve doesn't undo VAC bans, so all the $200.00+ in software I had registered to that account is now perfectly useless! FU steam, FU very much! The settings are in the autoexec.cfg in the HL2 directory btw.

That is bad. What do i change in the autoexec.cfg?
I havent even got a half life directory. Its all in the folder Steam. I dont seem to be able to find autoexec.cfg.
