New CPU or Start from Scratch

Specs: Windows 7, X6800/8Gig DDR2 PC28500
Well – it has happened – the latest Video Game [Call-of-Duty: Black OPS] is overwhelming my Computer System:
OS: Windows 7
CPU: X6800
MotherBoard: ASUS Striker-II Formula
Graphics: Two(2) EVGA GTX480-Super Clocked-SLI
RAM: 8Gig DDR2 PC28500

From what information I can find, this game is more CPU intensive than GPU intensive – as nice as the X6800, it is only Duo-Core. So what should I do.
Scrap the system that I have spent over $2000 on and is only a few years old?
Get a High-End Quad-Core Processor? Like the Q9550 or Q9550S? If so – Which one? Or is the a better processor or solution?
Thanks for the help – And Season’s Greetings to all at Tom’s Hardware – been a fan for DECADES

This isn't Tom's Hardware, this is They may be owned by the same company (BestOfMedia) but they are separate sites. Tom's has their own help forums.

Your system specs far exceeds the minimum requirements & should have no problem running Black Ops. I see no reason to upgrade any hardware at this time. If you feel there's a problem or lagging, check your settings, startup apps, run a virus/malware scan, defrag, etc, etc.

i agree with mickliq but black ops is known for its lagging issues did u buy the game or downloaded it from the net either way make sure the newest patches are installed patch 1,2 and 3 for the game which fixes cpu performances.zombie mode etc....
and for the record core2duo's my friend are not outdated recent games now are starting to support multicore technology thus making core2duo the minimum cpu for most games why go for a quad core when u have 2 gtx480's?!

computers are a second home

I just seem that the wife's computer - with an i7 730 cpu and only 6gigs of DDR3 memory on two older GTX8800's has absolutely no problem at all - but that is why I am asking for other's advice, not sure what is going on, but I would like to remedy it

I bought the game because of the CLAN I belong to - I much prefer the BattleField set of games - but I enjoy the company of the CLAN more than the game itself

Overall your system is better than your wife system. Did u try to update v-card driver? Try to use single gtx 480. If u are not happy with x6800 try to push it to 3.5-4ghz(asus striker II is capable of that speed)
