Specs: Windows XP SP3, 2.8 Celeron D. 2GB
Have an issue with my DVDROM. Use to be able to install games with no issues. Now the drive is not recognizing DVD's of any type at all, only vcd, cd audio etc. Could the drive just stop doing that. I have a LITEON DVD ROM GCC 4120 B. . DVDROM shows no media in the drive at all when putting original game install disks in.

Optical drives don't last forever. As I understand it, CDs are read using one wavelength, DVDs use another. It's possible that whatever mechanics are involded with reading DVDs have died. Did you try cleaning the lens?

I haven't done that, but I actually got another dvdrom and installed it and it reads nothing at all. It's a LG 22X Super Multi DVD/RW. Shows up installed correctly, but reads nothing at all. I replaced the ide cable. The light comes on when I open and close the tray, but seems I really don't hear the disk spinning at all. My luck a bad DVD/RW. I have been on other forums and have regedit deleting the upper and lower filters, etc. The motherboard is new and also the power supply. So frustrated. Confused on UDF and CDFS. I feel stupid. Any other suggestions? Going back to store to get another DVD/RW to replace this one or get my money back. Your help is sincerely appreciated.

I did one other thing, I saw in system services that udfs and cdfs were disabled. I went into regedit and changed the values to both services to be started and that worked okay, but dvdrom still not recognizing dvds at all.
