Looking for an old game :)

Specs: Windows 9x
The game was set in outer space, you could choose your spaceship (one being a smiley face). You chose to have one or multiple AIs as enemies/allys/free for all.
The map was divided into 4 quadrants with multiple planets spread over the map. You traveled by mouse click and went to other planets. The uninhabitable planets you could mine and sell the minerals to make money.
You could colonize habitable planets and as they "developed" they generated shields around that planet to protect them from the enemy as well as fired back. The shields looked like multiple overlapping squares wiggling around randomly.
You could also infect a planet with the plague or something and as it progressed and spread (via the enemy traveling to it and "catching" the plague) they planet would eventually die.
As you progressed through the game you could unlock alot of different weapons and such. (including the plague-type weapon and a nuke)
The game is older and was from a CD with a ton of games on it

The game you are looking for is called warpath. There is a recent version now by Synthetic Reality called warpath 97 and another on beta testing I believe.
