Looking for a new computer

Specs: Windows 7, 4GB
I wondering if it is worth the wait to shop for parts then build a computer or just get a basic off the shelf model and upgrade when I can? I only have a budget of around $550 to $600. Can anyone help?

For $500-600, you can build yourself a nice gaming rig. If you buy a cheap OEM desktop (HP, eMachines, etc) & then upgrade it, it will cost you more & you won't have as good a machine. It's your call. If you know how to build, you shouldn't even have to ask. Do you want AMD or Intel?

Using my theory of never paying more than $75 for any single component, here's a guide:

computer case (top mount PSU) - $40
500W PSU - $50
motherboard - $75
CPU - $75
4GB DDR3 memory - $50
gaming video card - $75
1GB HDD - $60
DVD burner - $20

Approx total = $445

I've been plotting a budget build for a couple of months. I'm in no hurry so I've been watching the sales & jumping when I see a good deal. I ended up with an Asus AMD 770 board ($60), Phenom II X3 740 black ($69), Radeon HD 5550 w/DDR2 ($25). I know the graphics choice could have been better but I figured I couldn't go wrong for $25. I can always upgrade.

I've got an extreme budget build in the works too. Biostar AMD 770 board ($35), Sempron 140 ($32), Radeon HD 4350 ($10). The Sempron is a single core but it has 1MB L2 & overclocks like mad.

Thanks for the advice I was thinking that building my own would be the best bet but was not sure for the price if it would have been cheaper to buy and upgrade. Right now I don't have a really computer or well a working one my hard drive destroyed it self so now I'm running off a Linux trial cd so I don't have spec when it said list your spec I though it was what I was looking for. Sorry for the misunderstanding from this first time poster

"my hard drive destroyed it self so now I'm running off a Linux trial cd"

Isn't it great that you can run an OS & get online without even having a HDD?
