Solved I got sudden lag in games

June 3, 2015 at 22:59:47
Specs: Windows 8.1 Pro
So, to keep it short, my computer has been lagging in every single game for a couple of days now. I have scanned it multiple times with malwarebytes anti malware (which found nothing), disassembled, cleaned, and put the entire PC back together, and have tried it on about 15 different games (ranging from Assassin's creed 3 to GTA V) and my frame rate hovers around 5. It started a couple of days ago, when I went to launch Assassin's creed 3 & GTA V. I didn't think anything about it, so I just rebooted and tried again. This didn't fix the problem, I'll post my specs at the bottom of this post.

So, if anybody has absolutely any idea what is going on, please post; even if you are just guessing. Nothing has recently been installed on my computer, and it runs just fine when I'm not playing a game. All of my drivers are up to date.

Pc specs
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2310 CPU @2.90Ghz
4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-2000
Geforce GT 640 2GB DDR3
Windows 7 64-bit
Motherboard: GiGabyte P61/H61

If you need any more information, just let me know.

Unlike Anti-virus programs and MalwareBytes, these two are particularly aimed at browser malware. Both are safe, small and widely used on this forum and security forums generally. Run them in the order given:

AdwCleaner:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
(blue Download button near top - not anything else on the page).
Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run the program. Use the "Scan" button, followed by the "Cleaning" button.

Junkware Removal Tool (JRT)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
(blue Download button near top - not anything else on the page).
Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run JRT. It might appear to have stopped at times or flash the screen but sit tight until it has finished.

If either of them find anything please copy/paste the logs on here so that we can check to see if further action is needed.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Another thing to consider is that your video card is not really a gaming card. I know that you insinuate that the games ran at least reasonably well before, but you still should consider it. In the past I did have one computer (last one) that had a video card that was just enough for a particular game when overclocked a little bit, but suddenly it was having trouble. I traced it back to a graphics card driver update that was pushed through by Windows update that I had not realized immediately. I manually updated the driver again but it was the same driver and the same issue. I then rolled back the driver to the prior one (one between the one I had and the newest one) and it ran well. I put in a complaint to NVidia and set Windows Update to fully manual. I waited at least 3 months and skipped over that driver and all was good. I also noticed that since I complained, NVidia driver have never since been under the important updates (Windows) though they are probably under the optional ones so I ignore them.
So, check to see if you have updated the driver very recently because every driver update does not always run well with all games, especially if the graphics card is just holding its own (barely) with that game.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

OK thanks. Try MalwareBytes and let us have the log for that too if it finds anything. After that try ADWCleaner once more - there is a chance it will then run the Clean.

"My graphics card is really a gaming card"

It may be a gaming card, but it's a low end/budget/entry level model. Here's a few clips from a 2012 review:

- "In early June, Kepler finally jumped in the kiddie pool aboard the GeForce GT 640, an offering situated firmly in budget territory"
- "Yes, believe it or not, Nvidia has equipped this card with DDR3 RAM instead of the speedier GDDR5. It's pretty sluggish DDR3, too"

http://techreport.com/review/23179/...

Here's a review of the Game Booster software you apparently have installed:

http://www.howtogeek.com/171734/ben...

And you should be getting your graphics drivers directly from Nvidia, nowhere else:

OK, I've no idea why ADW doesn't run - it's widely used. Whatever JRT found very little and MWB nothing, so I think we're back to a graphics driver issue, especially if it's only when gaming that you run into trouble. I guess you could consider System Restore, which works well on Win 8.1 - you'll only lose the programs you added since the date you choose.

Very cosy. I assume when you did your clean out you attended to all fans (inc GPU), Vents and CPU/GPU heat sinks particularly?

Silly question but are all fans spinning?

What, roughly, is the current room temperature?

What are the temperatures like after a period of just idling?

" I have scanned it multiple times with malwarebytes anti malware (which found nothing), disassembled, cleaned, and put the entire PC back together"
If you removed any of the heat sinks then you need to remove all applied thermal compound and properly apply a fresh amount of new thermal compound. See here:
http://www.arcticsilver.com/methods...
for the proper method for the CPU, GPU & chipset heat sinks you should be able to Google for info about is needed.
Did you blow out dust and debris with a can of compressed air made for the purpose or did you use another method?
Are all fans turning?
How many fans do you have, where are they positioned (front, back, side), and in what orientation are they (intake/exhaust)?
Please note that my system is idling right now at 28 degrees C., that is cooler than typical but yours is very hot.

I gave you a link to show you how to apply the thermal compound properly as per your CPU. You will be using the vertical line method and the link shows you the steps including pictures and reasons why that method is for your CPU.
The brand of thermal paste does not matter very much for normal use and any quality brand will be within a few percents of the best of them so if the price is reasonable for you then that is fine.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Note that your graphics card uses a small-ish fan so you should consider replacing your case fan (exhaust) with one with a higher CFM rating to move more air, just watch the DB rating so it won't get too noisy. This may help keep the graphics card a bit cooler and if your case has the place for it, you can also try putting a front fan blowing inward (intake) to move cool air directly towards the graphics card, this fan does not need to be a high volume air fan like the exhaust fan though.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

No reason wait at all. It is reported by those who test these things that thermal compound generally works better after it has been in place and warmed by the CPU so that the temperatures will actually go down slightly after a certain number of hours or days in use.
Just reread the directions link I supplied above because too much compound is worse than slightly too little.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Thermal paste is thermal paste, brand matters very little. In fact, there are several household items that can be substituted for a short term fix. Mustard, mayonnaise, or diaper creme all work well. Diaper creme contains zinc oxide which is the main ingredient in many thermal paste brands. See the following article:

Although I accept that alternatives might well work, it seems to me that you might as well get something designed for the purpose. It will probably do for about 20 CPUs and is inexpensive.

If you are in a rush to prove whether thermal contact is the issue I guess the alternatives could well do that.
