I'm an nVidiot myself, but I certainly wouldn't call DAAMIT's videocards "junk".

I'm averaging 33 fps @ 1920x1200 with my rig, which has two 8800 GTS cards in SLI, 4GB of RAM, and a dual core Opteron at 3.2GHz. Frame rate doesn't really change when the resolution is decreased--my CPU is definitely limiting the action.

I'm sure that with just one 8800 GTS, your quad core system will give you at least 45 fps. GTA IV needs a hell of a lot of CPU power to run smoothly.

Here's a GeForce 8800 GTS going for $114.99:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

A truly great price for a card that's faster than the ~$130 9800 GT.

Homebuilt projector:
Samsung 1080p panel
Pixelworks controller
2 HDMI, 2 Component, 1 VGA
Homebuilt enclosure
120" 16:9 screen
Connected to: HTPC w/ BD, satellite receiver, XB360.

what i think of ati is my opinion and a matter of personal preference...why you resort to "nVidiot " & "DAAMIT's" is beyond me...anyways that's your opinion but i prefer things i have used...ati has never been satisfactory to me...i've always used nvidia.anyways thanks for the links i will check them out.

A self-proclaimed nVidia fanboy would know that the 8400GS is a low end piece of crap & wouldn't have even considered it for gaming in the 1st place. Also, an nVidia fanboy shouldn't even have to ask which nVidia card would be good for gaming...he would know!

jam...as i have said before..on this site you make the choice to help or not..you must work for ati...since you defend them so much.
i simply asked for advice...if ya don't have aanything useful to say...don't post.this
video card came with my pc it was a gift and i had no choice in selecting it...like i have said before it's not what ya know for knowledge...but how you apply it...i know you help about 100 % of the ppl on here who need it.if i say ati is junk that is my opinion and i am entitled to it...just like your opinion you are entitled to.and calling me a "nvidia fanboy"...has no effect...so say what ya want...i help ppl on these forums when i can & when i have answers for ppl to help them with.you think that i had a choice in the pc that was bought for me...no it was a gift...so how can i have a choice from something that was given to me...if you're going to post don't waste my time or yours posting useless info that's not related to the post at hand.i come on these forums to help and get help when needed i don't know all about nvidia like you claim.....so you're jumping to conslusions.....quit wasting my time and yours.if you can help post..if not...i will find some help either way.

As I have told you before, I use whichever cards offer the best performance for the best price. Currently I'm running ATI cards on two of my machines, the 3rd, which is my Linux box, has an nVidia card. And when I build my next system, I will make my video card decision just as I always have, best performance/price ratio. Obviously you are too close minded & will stick strictly to nVidia cards...if that's your choice, so be it.

Regardless of all that, make sure your PSU can handle a high end card or you'll have to upgrade that when you upgrade the card. There's only one decent gaming card (keyword being "decent") that will work with your HP w/o a PSU upgrade, but since it's ATI, I won't even mention it. Here you go...got $230 (before rebates) to be able to do it right?

CORSAIR 650W ATX12V / EPS12V PSU - $80 after rebate w/free shipping

XFX GeForce 9800GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 - $110 after rebate w/free shipping

jam...freedom of choice if you like ati..then use ati...i like & prefer nvidia so i use nvidia i never critize what brand of video card you use...besides ati & nvidia are both very good competitors...and they both run games..they get the job done for gaming or whatever task you have in mind.and as for me being close minded..i think i have a right to be close minded...because one time i was using a ati video card a while back & i installed my drivers for the card & it crashed my whole system..and i lost a lot of data....so yeah i think i have a right to not use ati.i have had a lot of good luck with nvidia.and their cards i like.also my motherboard is built on a nvidia platform not ati.

If you lost data, it had nothing to do with the video card. Don't blame ATI for your mistakes. Why don't you have a backup system in place to protect your data just in case something goes wrong??

And the platform has nothing to do with it...ATI cards work just fine on nVidia based systems, nVidia cards work fine on ATI based systems.

"ati screwed up once and will never again get my business"

I've put together dozens of systems using both ATI & nVidia based cards, not to mention older systems using SiS, Trident, 3DFX, etc cards & I have NEVER had a driver bring down a system & cause data loss.

I'd blame IBK before ATI.

Guys, I have been on other forum help sites before, and this one was recommended to me by a friend to see if I have something to offer others and if I have an issue. So I am obviously new here and have looked around the site. I can see where this site can be very informative and helpful to many as long as one does not let ones ego get in the way. Unfortunitely, in this partictular post it seems that, that is what is happening as well as a few others. The cold facts are that the very minute you walk out of the store with your new computer or finish building your new computer, it is obsolete. So bickering over whose system is better or what card is better, or anything is non productive and quite frankly stupid. The two picking on the one person is like your ego is hurt because the one guy has a preference and it doesn't agree with yours. You two are acting like schoolyard bullies ganging up on him and then he is acting like he is arragant because he had a problem with one product. That to me is childish by all three. None of you listen to each other when you attack each other and call names. Every company has lemons and because one product was a lemon he should not judge an entire company. Those two ganging up on him are only making him more obstanant due to you ganging up on him with name calling ect. That is getting nobody anywhere and only causing hard feelings. We are supposed to be here to help one another and this type of behavior gets nobody anywhere. All three of you are acting like little children thinkinhg theirs is better because it's theirs. If this is the commonly accepted policy of the members of this site, I do not see where I can help others or get help due to the fact that everybody seems to want to impress and fight with each other instead of talk and share experiences openly. Thus I do not think this site will be of help to me but only aggrivate me due to personal ignorances and all the drama. You three acting like this, will only run off potential help for othewrs or make people afraid to ask for help for fear of getting jumped on. I am sure all three of you will read this and leave some kind of arragant or senseless remark without reading it and thinking about what it says, you will take it like I attacked you like you all attack each other and that will be a loss to everybody now and in the future to this site. If this continues, I will not come in and p[lay with little children having temper tramprums over who is better instead of talking and helping. Thank you anyway.

As to the original post, I have the 8400 GS video card in my HP system which is in the m9000z I bought awhile back. I am having no problems running GTA IV on my system. So my suggestion to you would be take your copy back to the store and have a new copy replace it since it appears that there may be an error on your copy. That does happen from time to time. Or even since the game itself does tend to be a resource hog, maybe you are running too much at a time while playing it or, you need more RAM when you want to do a lot and play at the same time. Like I said I have no issues or problems with that same video card running it on my system. Thank you.

There could be many reasons since I am running the game with no problems on my system with the same video card. That game is also DVD based. Therefore Jam, you are nothing but an internet bully in my opinion when you feel somebody is not bending to your will that you appear to think that you are the only one who know anything or have anything. When in fact you can not prove a thing you say so far since you could say anything and claim anything you like and it could be something someone else told you or you googled. And you are trying hard to impress everybody when in fact you could be a kid with nothing more than a 586 talking like you know something when others told you or google. So I find you insignificant and a keyboard warrior trying to force you way and likes that you got from google or everybody since you do not appear to have an open mind to other factors and I expected all three actualy to be just as rude and ignorant as you. You need to grow up and work with people and not act like you are above and better than anybody else. Trust me you are not any better than anybody since all our machines are obsolete like I already said.

how is benchmarks of a cod 4 comparison gonna help my situation...that's not related to my post.

GTA IV System Requirements: Are As Follows

Minimum System Requirements:

OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz, AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4Ghz
Memory: 1.5GB, 16GB Free Hard Drive Space
Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900 / 256MB ATI X1900

Recommended System Requirements

OS: Windows Vista - Service Pack 1 / XP - Service Pack 3
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1Ghz
Memory: 2 GB (Windows XP) 2.5 GB (Windows Vista)
18 GB Free Hard Drive Space
Video Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600 / 512MB ATI 3870

i think the specs speak for themselves....

"Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900"

oh btw my card is a 8400 GS and it is a direct X 10 card

if my card would not run GTA IV why would rockstar even include it for the specs for GTA IV ????

that makes absolutely no sense to me.
rockstar would be the laughing stock of the gaming community.

and btw GTA IV is 2 dual layer discs not cd's... there is a difference.

lol... I'm not even going to read all that.

AMD / ATi is junk, ATi's software is a REAL POS! But... Nvidia with some of their past driver releases is getting up there with ATi's bloatware quality.

Anyway....

I bought a 9600gso awhile back and other than the pre-production bios that says "NOT FOR SALE, INTERNAL USE ONLY" on the splash screen, it runs fine(fixed with a bios flash). My card is an EVGA which I hate, but newegg had a bunch of em for $79.00 back in october, and what a steal it was!

I would say a 9600gso, but NOT the 9600GT, or the 9800gt which is only $20.00 more. This right here is a freaking steal!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...

I would stay away from ATi since you seem to need to adjust the cards settings for every freaking game, or keep different versions of the drivers around for different games since different versions tend to display artifacts on one game, but not another, confusing yes? I don't hope for ATi's demise because then we'd be stuck with ONLY Nvidia and that would suck, but I hope they fire every singe software engineer they have and hire a whole new staff for their own good.

Good luck!
