Solved Graphics Lag in HotS

June 15, 2016 at 22:14:18
Specs: windows 10, 8gb
CPU: Intel E8600 3.3Ghz OC @ 4.0Ghz
PSU: Corsair GS 600
RAM: 8GB G-skill PC2 6400
GPU: XFX HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 256 bit
HD: WD 1TB Black label

AMD Driver version 15.11

The AMD raptr app wants to set HotS to all Ultra settings. When on all ultra setting the issue is worse. HotS recommends all High settings but even on these settings I have the issue but it is lessened.

Throughout the match I experience jerks and lag points. This is increased greatly the more enemies there are in the screen. Going from Ultra to High settings lessened the issue but only slightly. When low enemy count the fps sits around 38-45. When at High enemy count it drops to 28-35 but it can flat line and then jump back up.

Is there something I can do to fix this or do I need to lower setting even further.... Or do you think its a hardware issue? Please Help, thank you!

Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L.

I have been using windows ten on every machine it can go on and from my experience it runs just as good as Windows 7 if not better. Just my experience though.

Anyway though, it must have been an issue with Windows 10 that got patched recently because I went back to the RAPTR suggested settings and no more Jerks/Freezes/Lags. FPS still drops with large encounters but down to the mid to late 40s so no biggie. Who knows at this point but my guess is the above solved it.

What are you using for the gaming resolution?

The monitor's recommended Resolution of 1440x900.

If this is online gaming, check your internet speed, it could be causing issue if slow.
Are you running RAM at 400 speed / 800DDR so you have CPU/RAM ratio of 1:1 ? If not then might be part of it. (assuming CPU is speed 400 with multiplier of 10).

RAM is at 400 and I have a 1:1 says CPU-Z. Also to get it out of the way I clean installed Windows 10 only a couple months ago so the system is fresh. There is no malware, drivers are up to date, I don't run much while the game is running.

You think it could be these 15.11 drivers for the graphics card?

"The monitor's recommended Resolution of 1440x900"

I asked about the gaming resolution, not the monitor. The monitor should always be configured to use the native/recommended resolution, but you can lower the gaming resolution within the game's setup menu.

I always use the same as the monitor otherwise the game looks funny in some way. For instance the UI is too big, the viewing area is too small, the game is skewed in some way that makes it feel wrong.

The HotS recommended settings nets me a Constant 25-35 fps at any point, fluidly playable, with no jerking.

The AMD Raptr recommended settings sits at 45-65 fps until I run into large groups then it jerks here and there as it drops to the 25-35 fps range. The jumping back and forth from the 45-65 and the 25-35 range I assume causes the jerking.

There is only a 7% difference in CPU Usage and a 10% Difference in RAM usage. Either way, I am barely reaching 3/4 of my CPU/RAM Usage. So what is causing this drop in FPS? I was told a while back that this HD 6870 was slightly more than my system can handle and would be the most powerful it could utilize. It seems to me the CPU/RAM are expecting more from the GPU?

I cant seem to figure it out. The FPS Doubles when the settings are maxed but halves when meeting higher encounters. When the settings are set lower, the fps is halved and just stays at a constant halved.

Your hardware and reported settings appear to be fine. I assume you have a P43 or P45 series motherboard. I do not believe that there are proper drivers for Windows 10 for motherboards with these chipsets which could be your main issue, Windows 10 is using generic drivers for your hardware. If it was me, I would still be using Windows 7 on this hardware.

The main issue with running Windows 10 on older hardware is that the hardware mfg's do not offer hardware drivers for it so Windows 10 either makes do with Windows 7 drivers or uses generic ones by Microsoft. This is where updates like the one you just got can cause issues.
I am glad however that you got it resolved.
