Yeah quad or triple core, there are cheap athlon II x3 x4, & phenom II x3 x4. U need better v-card, i recommend hd 4850 or 9800gt 1gb not 512mb. And decent psu is required 400w +12v@30 minimum.

The system isn't ok. What is your motherboard name? The mobo support am2, u can buy dual core cpu but we need to know the mobo name or system name. More ram is required atleast 2gb minimum. If your going to buy nvidia card start with 9800gt 1gb because gta iv & crysis are demanding games so u need better system to play them. Open pc case and check psu label for +3.3v,+5v,+12v how much amps? If the psu is crappy u need new psu.

ok....i also have a compaq laptop c2d 2.0, 2gb of ram, i am planning to install windows 7 64-bit, if i add more 4gb of ram, it means total of 6gb of ram is very effective for processing and some games also, and can i use same symantec antivirus which i already have in windows 7 32-bit and play games like san andreas, ashes 2009, virtua tennis 2009, not so latest but performance more than before..?

Your system has a weak single core CPU & not enough RAM. You didn't mention the graphics but based on the CPU/RAM info, it's not a good setup for gaming. You'd have to upgrade the CPU, add more RAM, add a gaming video card & probably a new power supply. As it sits right now, I wouldn't have even installed Win7 on it.

As for your laptop - adding more RAM can't make up for the mediocre gaming graphics, but it's definitely better than your desktop.

"Modern DirectX 10 games will run only in low details and resolutions. Older DirectX 9 games, like HalfLife 2 or Far Cry run fluently in medium to high details."

Adding more RAM will only increase performance if your system is lagging due to not having enough RAM. It's called the "law of diminishing returns". And it would have very little impact on gaming performance because gaming performance relies heavily on the graphics. If you have a crappy video card, it wouldn't matter if you have 2GB or 20GB RAM, you'd still have crappy game play.

According to Crucial, your Compaq CQ40 has 2 memory slots & can accept up to 4GB of DDR2-800 per slot. You said you have 2GB, so it's probably 2 x 1GB. To increase your RAM amount AND maintain dual channel mode, you would have to replace both sticks or RAM with either a 4GB kit (2 x 2GB) or an 8GB kit (2 x 4GB).

A 4GB (2 x 2GB) kit sells for $98.

A single 4GB stick sells for $190.

An 8GB kit (2 x 4GB) sells for $380.

Newegg has the same RAM for $307. Is it worth it?
