Within a month or so of buying this computer (Gateway NV55C), the Sims 3 started occasionally shutting off the computer. In the middle of playing, or loading the game, it will sort of short circuit the computer--turns off and then turns back on after about a second, Sometimes it freezes when it tries to restart and I have to hold the power button to turn it off and on again. The problem has gotten worse and worse with time. Now, I just tried to play Age of Empires II, a pretty undemanding (though fabulous) game, and it froze the whole computer, which has never happened before.

I can't seem to find a restore point from more than two months ago (I've had the computer nearly a year). Should I reformat the computer--would that even help, or is the computer just doomed to not play games? I moved to another country, so tech support is not going to happen probably.

Thank you!!!!

It's important to state that your computer is a laptop. Here's the specs:

It's an "everyday" laptop, not a gamer, so you shouldn't expect decent gaming performance. The shutdowns may be caused by overheating, but may also be caused by a software or driver problem. Make sure the cooling vents aren't clogged with dust or lint & when you use the laptop, make sure it's placed in such a way that air can get in/out of the vents. In other words, it should be on a hard surface such as a tabletop, not sitting on your lap, the couch, a bed, etc. And it might help to raise the rear of the laptop to allow better airflow. You should also disable the "automatic restart" feature:
