Hi people, i think i need some help! My pc is having problems playing games that it used to be able to play with ease years ago. As ive recently upgraded my RAM from 512 to 2.5MB i thought it might have solve this problem. Now im assuming its my graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce FX5200) but its the same one ive always used. According to the games my requirement are well above the recommended. Some of the games im trying to play are Max Payne2, HalfLife2, Mafia. Can anyone suggest how i could possible resolve this problem?

Thanks.

Ive opened up the desktop i cleaned all inside if thats what you mean. I dont know if i have the same drivers but i do have the latest one directly from the NVIDIA website.

What i have just noticed is that for some reason the main drivers for both the graphics card (nv4_disp.dll) and SoundMAX Digital audio (smwdm.sys) are not WHQL logoed. Will this make a difference??

Ive reinstalled drivers for both NVIDIA and SoundMAX and they now both say they are WHQL logoed. Tried to play max payne 2 and its all fine through the prologue but as soon as the first cut scene starts it freezes for about 5-10 sec then catches up and with less than a minute later it does the same!! What the hell is going on?! Ive even used an online check to see if the games are compatable (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest) and they pass with flying colours. I just dont understand. These are definitely games that have worked before. Can anyone suggest anything else i could possibly try?

thanks

The FX5200 never was a great card but it should have no problem handling the games you mentioned. Your system is most likely bogged down with a bunch of garbage programs. Download & install CCleaner-slim...run the cleaner & the registry scanner...remove everything they find. Do a full anti-virus & spyware/malware scan. If you don't have an anti-spy program, download MalwareByte's AntiMalware. Then run MSCONFIG to disable all useless startup apps.

I have recently completed a full Antivirus scan and a Malwarebytes scan. Ive also taken off all the startup programs i dont use. I will try the CCleaner though. Hope it does something.

thanks

Okay run the cleaner and the registry scanner and fixed all the issues. The games are still freezing. Thanks for the attempt though. This is the worst problem ive ever had. Beats all the viruses. Any other ideas?

Cheers.

I just installed an earlier version of NVIDIA updated drivers. I had the 175.19 version installed but i had kept an older version (71.89) and, even though it still freezes, there are longer gaps between occurances. Ive tried to install the version that came with my pc (via the Resource CD) but for some reason it doesnt acknowledge its on there. When i do it manually i can extract the files but on start up i get the blue screen saying it cannot locate 'nv4_disp'. Sorry for the long winded explanation but does anyone know what this could mean?

Thanks

Just thought id ask - Could video and audio codecs cause this problem? Also, unlike max payne2 and HalfLife2, it seems the actual gameplay of mafia works. It just freezes during the cut scenes. Furthermore ive noticed theres no music or sound during the advertising (when the game starts) and the opening cut scene when there used to be??
