display driver has stopped working error

Acer / Aspire 5610-4537

Specs: Windows Vista
My acer aspire 5610-4537
duo processor t2250 (1.73 ghz, 533 hmz fsb, 2 mb l2 cache)
I've been playing this game league of legends since it was in open beta testing, about a year now. they do frequent updates to the game.
I never had any problem with playing it, and running ventrilo at the same time.
These last few weeks i've been getting 'display driver has stopped working and has recovered' messages during play
i used to run 15+ fps (not great but enough to play)
now i'm getting MAYBE 7fps (not enough to play)
when i get the message, my screen goes black, but i can hear the music and the sounds of the game still going on, and i have to ctrl+alt+delete out of the game and then open it back up and try again.
This problem has left me completely unable to play a game that i used to play just fine.
I checked the minimum req of the game recently, and it does say it needs a 2 ghz processor, but i've been able to play the game before, not sure if the req has changed over time?

either way, this problem is really annoying.

another thing, i went into my c drive to see what gfx card info i had in there, and i found a nvidia folder, with nothing in it?

any insight would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
