All 3 of those cards perform at approx the same level. You're not really upgrading as much as you may think:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...

As for your problem with the new cards, I doubt it's a PCI-e compatibility issue & your PSU *should* be capable of handling either of the cards. In fact, I think they both consume less power than the HD 4870. The BIOS is almost certainly not the issue. Are you sure the cards were fully seated in the PCI-e slot & the PCI-e plug (6-pin or 8-pin?) connected to the cards? No adapter was used, right?

The guy at the shop is right...all you'd really be gaining is DX11 support. The HD 5850 isn't a significant upgrade either. If you checked the link I supplied in my other response, the reviewer wrote: "I don’t recommend upgrading your graphics card unless the replacement card is at least three tiers higher. Otherwise, the upgrade is somewhat parallel and you may not notice a worthwhile difference in performance."

The difference between the HD 4870/5770/5830 & the HD 5850 is a single tier. $315 is a lot to spend on what will probably only be a modest performance increase. And considering your system specs, it seems like a huge waste of money. Why do you feel you need to upgrade?

There are some games which will take advantage of 1gb v-memory, game like gta-iv and upcoming titles. Hd 5850 is the true dx 11 card (look for metro 2033 benchmark) but it's not a good upgrade from hd 4870. If really want to upgrade start with hd 5870.
