Specs: Windows XP
Hi! Just wondering if my PC will even let me install games on a Pentium 4 rig even though the minimum requirement is dual core? And if so, what would the downside be exactly?

What are your other system specs?
What game are you trying to run?
I use a P4 system and it plays games fine (WoW, RainbowSix Vegas 2, Order of War, BF2142)..though fine doesnt mean full settings all the time. Most games i play in med-high settings.
But a P4 could possibly hold back more modern GPUs.

Intel P4 640 w/HT 3.20GHz
2GB DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400
Nvidia GeForce 9600GT 256-bit, 512MB GDDR3
23" LG Flatron

In order for us to help you, you have to list your full system specs (CPU speed, RAM, Motherboard, Video Card, Power Supply, Monitor Resolution)
and also the name of the game you're trying to run on your system.

E8500 | 3GB | 320GB | 9800 GT 1GB @ 720/990 | HP w1907 @ 1440 x 900 60hz| Win7 Ultimate x64

It will install. It'll even run, but you won't have much fun with it.

Super 939 | Dual-core Opteron 185 @ 3.2GHz | 4GB PC3200, CL2 | 1.0TB
2x GeForce 8800GTS in SLI | Blu-Ray | X-Fi Ti Pro PCI-E | W7 Ultimate x64

Thanks 4 the replies. I was looking 2 run OpFlash2 Dragon Rising on a P4 3GHz w/2Gb RAM DDR 400 (i think) with a Radeon X1650 250Mb RAM (again, i think mab 512) on a 1280x1024 SyncMaster monitor (altho i usually reduce to 1024x7something) and ONLY offline running WinXP (blessed thrice over by the Pope :P)

Your CPU would be fine, would suggest a new GPU though.

Intel P4 640 w/HT 3.20GHz
2GB DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400
Nvidia GeForce 9600GT 256-bit, 512MB GDDR3

CPU matters somewhat, but you can still play modern games on an old computer so long as you have a good video card. A Radeon X1650 is not a good video card.

PowerMac 9600(1 ghz G4)
512mb RAM
50gb SCSI
ATi 9200 PCI
