BF1942 multiplayer mode freezes

Electronic arts Battlefield 1942 comp co...
August 26, 2010 at 12:31:49
Specs: Windows XP, Quad core / 4Gb RAM
Yesterday I could play with no problems BF1942 online, but today as soon as I click the Multiplayer option in the Online mode it freezes.

I can click on Local network, create... etc but as soon as I click Multiplayer it crashes. I have tried reinstalling the patches, and upgrading them, but it still happens,

I didn't install anything special between yesterday and now, so my computer is basically the same... I have also tried disabling the Firewall but nothing helps

Single player works just perfect, and my computer is good enough to play this game in the highest quality without any problems,

Any help here?

So you guys think this is some sort of widespread problem? It does seem like it since I have tried every single possibility on my computer to fix it

Let's wait a couple days to see if it gets fixed, has anyone heard of any special notice from EA about this?

Also having same problem today yet was playing till late last night Desert Combat and Final. A friend of mine had this problem about 3 years ago, yet 2 of us next to him did not. And a few days later it just worked for him so the problem was never known. Very odd that so many have the same problem suddenly. Perhaps a punkbuster issue???

Will post when I know too!

Very same problem happening for me on the very same day. It's bugging the hell out of me. I open the came, click multiplayer, then Internet, and bam... freeze. I sit around staring at the screen. eventually the box which contains the list of servers appears, but no servers are listed.

This has to be on their end, right?

Btw, love the ATF server.

Ok guys igorigir was right this is the fix:

1- First disconnect your computer from the Internet (Whichever way you prefer)
2- Now open BF1942 and go to Multiplayer -> Internet, but DONT click Reload
3- Connect again to the Internet with BF1942 still open
4- Go back to it, Refresh servers, and click Join

Play :)

Although this solution does not work very well, since as soon as the server list is reloaded it freezes. But it let's you play if you know which server to chose!

Here is one solution. You will need to know your server IP if you want to connect to a server other than ATF's:

this is a game spy issue.

SETUP
Right-click a shortcut to Battlefield and click copy.
Right-click an empty space on your desktop and click paste.
Right-click your new BF shortcut copy and choose re-name.
Re-name copy of shortcut to the server you want it to join.
ATF MAIN
Right-click your new server shortcut and choose properties.
In the Target: section, it should read "C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe"

You need to now add your command-line switches, these are
+restart 1 (skips movies and adds) optional
+joinServer IP:PORT (adds the direct link) case sensitive

Your new taget line should read (for ATFmain)
"C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +restart 1 +joinServer 68.181.188.110:14567

you can replace the server IP with your own if you choose.

Note: if your are using WIN7 it should read: "C:\Program Files (x86)\EA Games...

same problem here. workaround is to change target on icon to

"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +restart 1 +joinServer (server ip).

works just for one server, you cant get a list of other servers. If you try, it freezes again.

Man.. I shoulda searched first... my game started doing it a month ago. Once in a while during the game it froze. Then today when I tried to play multiplayer it started doing it too. I uninstalled & reinstalled 5 times, erased mods... did everything I could imagine. Then gave up. I just typed into search... "bf 1942 freezes when i try to multiplayer" and I get this wonderful forum, lol. I agree it is widespread and we will wait till it gets fixed.

I could never get BF1942 to run right, it would run for 10-15 min then drop out and not want to connect to anything again. The game was fun, but extremely buggy.

EA fixed that with BF2

512mb RAM
50gb SCSI
ATi 9200 PCI

You dont have to disconnect the network cable to load a game. Go to gamespy's 1942 server site (without starting your Battlefield 1942 application), and open up a multiplay game from there. You will be able to get in and play. It still will lock up when you are done though.

Another person here.

I have never seen this problem before and I have been playing since the original demo came out.
What is F!d up is that this is possible from the get go. IE directly on our computers.
This isnt like not being able to locate a server. Which would mean the EA server is down. This is stopping OUR computers from even looking.

That is pretty F!d up.

And this is the ONLY thread I have found about this.
I believe I was on Wed. Thursday night it didnt work...

Will keep this marked.
Please post links to ANY other threads talking about this.

OK
So I decided to go over to GameSpy just to check and
see if this was there doing and it seems that it is just that. Gamespy Master Server List is down.
How long ?
Probably a few days by guess of last time the server went down. (though our computers didnt freeze up ...)

It's EA's fault. Nearly everyone I spoke to has the same problem - no changes were made on their PCs.

You'll have to use a third party program to browse servers, or connect to servers already in your list by modifying the shortcut or using the unplug/disable network trick.

I've been playing this game for several years without a problem, and now I'm having the same exact problem as you.
I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what went wrong. I tried re-instaling the latest video card driver for my nvidia 240 card, changing the card for my old one, checking my firewall, running a malware scan, updating the Atheros LAN driver for my ASUS P5K board, all to no avail.
Now I see this is a widespread problem, as quite a few other players are also experiencing this problem as well. And all of us starting having this problem at about the same time, August 26.
I'm glad it's not my system, but hope someone can offer a fix. Good luck to all.

The problem apparently with the Gamespy servers, because you can get into the servers directly if you know the IP. Hopefully Gamespy bis aware of this and will fix it soon. THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH OUR COMPUTERS.

My Battlefield stopped on the 26th also, worked fine on the 25th. So this is a gamespy problem?? Maybe they are trying to force people to go to a new game. Increase sales that kind of thing. Maybe someone will come up with an alternate way to connect like they did when Those b---tardS at Sierra closed down WON for halflife.

Hi, My BF1942 stopped as described with the same issue around the same time. I read on other forums that GameSpy have migrated to a new datacentre:
http://www.poweredbygamespy.com/blo...
http://forums.epicgames.com/showthr...

So I don't think there is any plan for things to break - they just have done. I have downloaded qtracker.com and that works, however there is no-one out there on the BF 1942 servers :( at the moment.

More infor on qtracker at link below (thanks to earlier post by nutwork)

Battlefield 1942 - Not Responding - Help Needed 8/29 12:30am
The frozen multi-server screen is a problem for all I think.

Got back playing thanks to this site:
http://www.gametracker.com/search/b...

Choose BF1942 in the server type and then click 'join' from the big list. Had to install a little software - gametracker lite - GTsetup.exe - for the'join' link to work but I'm up and running again.

Some of the servers are slimmer than ever now. Wonder if the proper server population function will ever work again.

cheers folks

-----------------------------------------

and for moongamers...... 2 new desktop shortcuts straight to the game - one is for TDM the other is for CQ

1 - Right click a blank bit of desktop and choose 'New'>>'Shortcut'
2 - In the wizard that pops up copy one of the links below and paste it into the blank input box:

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +restart 1 +joinServer 64.34.180.19:14567

"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +restart 1 +joinServer 64.34.179.229:14567

3- give the new shortcut a name - like BF1942 TDM or CQ

4 - doubleclick the new shortcut to play

To copy and paste the command highlight the link with mouse, then CTRL C ( to copy ) then in the wizard CTRL V to paste.
