Please refer to the link given below as it may have some useful information for you:

Looking at the benchmarks it seems 8800 gt is much better than 8400 gs however, both the cards may not be able to provide decent FPS (Frames Per Second) on high settings.

You may have to play with the graphic settings to get optimum result.

The 8400GS is very low end & NOT much of a gaming card. The 8800 GT is a true gaming card but it's beginning to show it's age (released in 2007). Between the 2, there's no contest, the 8800GT is much better, however, it requires more than twice as much power as the lowly 8400GS. Make sure you have a very good power supply.

You really should consider a more modern energy efficient PCIe card.
