Now that's a strange board. It's based on the Intel 865 chipset--which was THE socket 478 chipset to have a few years ago--yet it supports C2Ds and even C2Qs.

First of all, find out which version of the board you have. This should be written somewhere on the board. If you have version R2.00 or newer, along with the latest BIOS, then you should be able to drop in a Core 2 Duo.

ASRock claims that 1066MHz bus CPUs are supported by overclocking the northbridge. However, I have no idea how well the good old i865 handles bus speeds above 200/800MHz. Perhaps jam or Skip know...

For now, consider an 800MHz FSB CPU such as the Core 2 Duo E4600 (2.4GHz). Then, drop in a powerful AGP card like the Radeon HD3850. Not only will you have a system capable of any game at 1280x1024/high or 1680x1050/medium, you'll also be the envy of AGPers around the

Homebuilt projector:
Samsung 1080p panel
Pixelworks controller
2 HDMI, 2 Component, 1 VGA
Homebuilt enclosure
120" 16:9 screen
Connected to: HTPC w/ BD, satellite receiver, XB360.

Here are a few processors worth looking at...

Like jackbomb said, you need to find the revision of your motherboard before buying anything. ASRock's website seems a little vague about which cpu's are supported.

I've seen that page. I also read that page and nowhere does it mention Allendale core or any other Core2Duo core processor.

Why do you think I said "...seems a little vague about which cpu's are supported."?

Anyway, here's the supported cpu list for the version 2 board.

Now; you might guess why we'd like to know the revision number of the motherboard.
