Try a new USB cable. If that makes no difference I usually give up at that point and just replace the unit. I then restore the data to it from one of my other three backup hard drives.

Never save your important data just on one external hard drive. You need at least two drives with identical data on them - - I use four.

And dvd is a useful secondary storage option too; as very unlikely both dvd and hard drive will fail at the same time?

Also see if you can view the contents of the drive using another computer. If not that will about prove for certain that the drive itself that has failed.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Oops, your hard disk drive master boot sector might got damaged. There are many related raw drive problems and you may encounter such errors reported by windows

chkdsk is not available for raw drive
drive is not formatted, do you want to format it now (raw is not regular file system type - usually fat32, ntfs, ntfs5)

so far as i know there is no tool which could change your raw back to ntfs but you can restore files from the raw disk.
