what causes printer to say their is no commun

Specs: Windows XP
I have a Dell V305 printer. It prints a test page, but when I try to print from the computer it just says communication unavailable. I am not real good with computers so I don't understand all that computer talk. All I know is we have had this printer for over a year & it's always worked. We had a problem with a storm & knocked the power out, but I don't know what it did. Can anyone please tell me what I need to do to get this printer to communicate with the computer. Thanks Donna

If you have the software disk that came with the printer use it to reinstall the drivers. If not go to http://support.dell.com/downloads and enter your printer number to get to the download site.
