using win 2000 hardware on win 7 machine

Specs: Windows 7
I currently have an antiquated laptop running win 2000, acting as a data loader/verifier for no longer supported test equipment. The i/face is via a proprietary cable attached to a PCMCIA card.
I have the original Win 2000 driver, and a copy of the data transfer software, but was wondering if this could be made to work on a win 7 laptop with PC Card slot?

Might it work if you installed W2K in a VM on the win-7 machine; presuming you have a W2K installation disk?
