Solved usb 3.0 not starting. remains grey in device manager

November 29, 2017 at 00:40:25
Specs: Windows 10
I am using Windows 10 Fall Creators Update 1709. The USB 3.0 root hub and xtensible controller 3.0 0.96 microsoft doesn't show up in device manager. Remains grey when I look for hidden devices. Hence I can't use the ports. USB 2.0 starts. I do not have this problem before. Sometimes it showed up after few reboots but most of the time no.

I have updated the drivers in device manager but to no avail. In windows update there was nothing related to update either. I also tried other methods as suggested in the internet but failed also.

If it's not seen in Device Manager then it is most likely a hardware fault. It also fits with it being intermittent in nature. Could be a poor connection inside.

Is this a PC or laptop - better still what is the make and model number?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Thanks for the reply. Greatly appreciate it.

It is a laptop Dell Inspiron N4110 14R. Bought in 2011 came with windows 7 then. Free upgrade to win 10.

Is there anything can be done? Since the laptop is quite old I think it may not be feasible to replace the parts which may not have even. If not then I just stick to usb 2.0 ports.

Thanks again.

Not much scope for hardware fixes in a laptop. Nothing more I can suggest but keep watching to see if anyone else has some thoughts on this.
