USB 2.0 Hub PCMCIA card. Laptop crashing.

June 29, 2011 at 13:25:18
Specs: Windows XP, P4 1.6 / 1gb
I have an Acer 270 Travelmate laptop. (specs here: http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/n...
It only has usb 1 so I decided to get a usb 2.0 PCMCIA card. I got it on ebay and it was simply titled "USB 2.0 4 Ports HUB PCMCIA Cardbus Adapter For Laptop". It has no brand name.
I've updated the cardbus drivers from acers website and it is recognised in device manager. So far so good. The optical mouse works in it too. But when I plug my 150mps wi fi dongle into the card the mouse pointer slows down and when the dongle is pulled out my computer freezes.
A power lead came with the card so I plugged that into a free usb 1 socket and connected it to the card for extra power.
Things turned out better this time but I was getting limited connectivity from the wifi dongle and only 18kbps (and I still couldn’t get online) instead of the usual 48 from the usb 1 port.
And. If I pulled the dongle out of the card it would still crash.
If anyone could help me I would greatly appreciate it.
Regards
Tony

If you mean safely remove devices then yes. But my problems occure before any of that. The dongle is not running as good as it does in the usb 1 input and even though it says it has limited connectivity i cannot get online at all.

It would appear that the Laptop is not providing enough power to the card, a 2 Port PCMCIA Card would of been better. Even better would be a mains powered 4 port external hub.

I have service pack 3. I thought I would of run into trouble with printers and external HDDs when it came to power issues, not little wifi dongles?
