Synaptics touchpad software won't stay installed - HP laptop

Specs: Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium SP1, AMD A8-3500 APU / 8 GB RAM
My Windows 7 64-bit laptop has an integral Synaptics touchpad. It quit working after I installed Windows Updates. I've tried multiple times to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Each time I install them, after the required restart, they're not on my PC. They're not in the Control Panel, not in the device list, and the only thing I can find on the hard drive is a folder in C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP. But if I try to run the install executable from that folder, nothing happens. I'm able to use an external mouse, but I really don't want to have to.

Any suggestions? I've tried a restore to factory defaults and that worked for a while but then it quit working again. I have a feeling it's caused by one of the Windows Updates, but I have no idea how to determine which one.

Look in the "Optional Updates" section to see if you can find an update for your touchpad driver. You can hide an update from there so it isn't automatically installed.

You've been helped by a 15 year old.

I don't think it's that. The optional update for the touchpad is the same version as the one I get from HP.
