sound not working!

February 5, 2011 at 20:14:05
Specs: Windows XP
I have had a sound problem for a few weeks now. I will start up my computer and I will have no sound. Drivers are installed and recognized and the speakers are hot. I have learned to uninstall my drivers, reinstall them and if I restart the computer after the installation the sound doesn't work. If I don't restart after installation, sound works fine until my next reboot. The computer is gateway E-4100 series with SB Audigy 2 as sound card... I have asked all my computer savvy friends and they can't figure it out... :(

So the sound works after you've installed the software, but not anymore after reboot? That is a pretty unusual problem. Check to see if you have drivers for previous sound cards, or old drivers/software of your sound cards, or otherwise software that might interfere with the functionning of your sound card in your start up programs. First reflexes are to check Startup in the start up menu as well as the icons in your notification area that might represent interfering software. Then run "msconfig" and check in Startup and Services to see if any of the software you see might be interfering as well. Monitor the volume configuration as you fiddle with this to see if it changes, and check to see if, between the installation of the drivers and right after your start up, anything in volume control is changing automatically. Check the BIOS settings to make sure there's no erratic configuration forcing the usage of a sound card that isn't there. Check in volume control to see if you have several output devices and if one couldn't be disabling the other erratically. As unlikely as these things seem, the simple fact of having an integraded sound peripheral and a sound card expansion can confuse the computer quite a bit.
