PC won't recognize Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS

Specs: Windows 7
I have a Compaq Presario sr1603wm desktop PC. I just bought a Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS graphics card because the graphics card on my motherboard is going bad. I installed it and then plugged monitor into it and turned the PC on. The PC did not even recognize "new hardware" or anything. I run Windows 7 OS on that PC as well as Windows XP on the other Hard drive I have installed in that computer. Now I went to install the drivers (from the CD) that the Nvidia came with but it said that there were "no compatable drivers" for my PC. So, I went to the Nvidia website and saw that they have Windows 7 drivers for that Nvidia geforce 8400 GS graphics card. I tried to install those drivers but then "set-up" said that I wasn't running Vista or Windows 7 32-bit on my PC so those drivers were not compatable. WHAT DO I DO?? I cannot take this graphics card back to the store because there is a "No return policy" at that store. Please help me in any ways that you can think of. I would be eternally grateful for any help at all that can help me resolve these issues.

Have you disabled the on-board graphics?
