My external hard drive wont appear on my computer

Maxtor 160gb external hard drive

Specs: Windows XP
My external hard drive is FAT32 compatable, however just recently it isn't showing up on a Windows or a Mac, the disk is spinning it just isn't being recognised.
Please help

I know nothing about Macs, but on a Windows PC you need to check if a drive letter has been assigned to it. Sometimes Windows fails to assign a drive letter to an external drive, which means you won't see it in Windows Explorer.

Go to Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Computer Management
Click Disk Management.
Look at the bottom right pane (the horizontal ribbons for the drives)

If you can see the ribbon for the external drive, right-click on it and choose "Change Drive Letter & Paths" >> then click "New".

If it isn't shown even in Device Manager, that drive may have failed. Test it with the manufacturer's diagnostic software (the installable Windows version). Links here:

my external drive was showing on the computer,but inside data is empty.how can i find back my old data for this case?Pls help,thanks!

This worked great on my 250 GB Hitachi. I lost my data but the HD is operational. I can recover it with an appropriate utility!
