HP scanjet 5100c driver install problem

March 18, 2011 at 14:47:08
Specs: Windows XP
I am trying to install the software from the CD so that I can download the update for the driver. My CD says this software doesn't support win 98 and NT only 95...and then stops the install. I am running Win XP. How do I get the software to install so I can download and use the update for the software? This scanner uses a parallel port not usb rendering the WIA driver useless in this case. Is there a way to make WIA run on the parallel port also? Then I won't need the software at all because my scanner will be recognize via WIA and will work fine. This scanner is perfectly good. I bought it new when it first came out and haven't used it in years but need to now. Shoot...HP needs to update their software. Anyway...any suggestions or help would be wonderful. Thanks...

Thank you for your quick reply...unfortunately the link you provided is for the updated driver. I can get that at HP but it recommends that the original software be already installed before updates are downloaded. That is where I am stuck. My XP won't install the original drivers from the CD. I did come across what I thought might be the original software from the link you gave and downloaded that but once I unzipped it there was no install or setup file. So lost with that idea. I was told that I could still use the scanner if I utilize WIA which is preinstalled in XP running systems when a usb connected device is used. However...this scanner uses a parallel connection...so what now? Is there a WIA for parallel ports and if so where can I get a download for it because so far my laptop does not even see I have the scanner connected at all. Thanks again ...

yes...tried that too. It asks me if I want to add a device and then asks me to enter a disk...which in my case is the CD. Then when that fails...it has a drop down list of brands I can choose from. So I select Hewlett Packard and the only choices that pop up are 3 camera's. No scanner choices in the list or even a general driver download choice. So that option doesn't work. The odd thing is in my control panel there is an icon entered that says Caere Scan Manager 3.0. When I click that it shows my scanner as one that looks like it is available but when I select that as my scanner of choice nothing happens. That icon is there whether I have the scanner connected or not. So that is a mystery why it's even there. That might not be relevant to this issue so moving along....any other suggestions? Thanks...all is appreciated.

Thank you so much X86. I think the forum you suggested might actually have what I need. I just downloaded one of the HP drivers from a higher model and will see if that does the trick. If not...there were a few other ideas on that forum that I will give a try. Thanks again and will post if it's a success.

Ok...here are my findings. The download of the higher HP scanner doesn't recognize my scanner however oddly will allow me to use the button on the front of my scanner directly. That opens a screen that asks me if I want microsoft documents to run, microsoft scanners and camera wizard to run and microsoft office scanner to run. I used all and they all work perfectly allowing me to choose options and preview scan as well as choose where I want the finished doc to go. I also downloaded VueScan 8.5.41 and that one does recognize my scanner however that leaves a permanent $ sign on all docs which can't be removed unless you buy the software. So the free version leaves this watermark which damages the outcome of the document. So the free version isn't good...but I know now I can buy it if I want and my scanner should work fine. I opted to use the HP higher scanner version since I didn't have to buy anything and it allows me to use the button on the scanner. The software itself does have to be open but the kicker is you can't use it directly. haha It only facilitates the scanner to automatically open one of the other options I mentioned earlier and in that case is a work around of sorts.
