Do the headphones still work when you plug them in? It is a mechanical switch that disables the speakers when you plug in headphones, so if you have never used headphones on the laptop before I suspect the switch that disables the speakers is stuck. The only thing I can suggest is spraying the headphone socket with a small amount of switch cleaner and then inserting & removing the headphone jack a few times to see if it will release the connection.

Yes, so that implies the small contact switch that disables the laptop speakers when you plug in the headphones, but re-enables the speakers when you remove the jack, is stuck in the 'headphone' position, so leaving the speakers disabled, even when you remove the headphone jack.
