Solved How do I find & install wireless LAN driver for my laptop ?

February 2, 2014 at 10:39:29
Specs: Windows 8, intel i3, 4GB
How do I install wireless LAN driver for my Toshiba satellite L850 i2011 (Windows 8) ?

I installed windows 8 and the wireless driver is not working. I tried to find and install drivers but my effort went in vain . I found that I can use wifi in Ubuntu but not in windows.
Your help would be appreciated if you guide me where to find the appropriate drivers and how to install them.
Thank you

Can you determine/ find the actual model of your wifi adapter? If you had win-7 originally installed and you have the manual for your laptop when it arrived (and its one of the CDs that came with it (according to Toshiba), then that information may be there?

I can't find your model as posted above either… If I trawl/search via google it does show up on third-party sites for drivers…

Can you double check your model number details - just in-case you have missed a " P P or otherwise made an unintentional error…?

Found this link - which may help:

http://www.official-drivers.com/ins...

It does offer win8 drivers… but not sure if it's a complete win 8 driver package which will included your wifi or not… Only way to find out is to try it?

They give you three separate options/choices to get the drivers; may have to try each one in turn to succeed?

Read the page information carefully first… and see how you get along with it all?

The link paulsep has posted appears to be the "only" source for win 8/8.1 drivers for that model… That model isn't listed in US/UK support areas; it is in Australia - but upto win7 - only…

And the user manual for and upto/including win-7is on the hard drive… as pdf…

However when you go to the link from (paulsep above) site and dig around the support and downloads areas… you can find the latest pdf one here:

as part of the updated pages/downloads etc. for the win-8 release… (all 64bit…?)

http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support...

this link is little shorter (the same "stuff" is at the bottom of the page of info at the above link…)

http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support...

The win 8 version of the user manual is there too…

If you check/read the "how to" section you will this at the bottom of the list (Downloading/installing drivers various…)

Hello trvlr the model number given is correct.
I installed the setup from above link and it is showing that I have to install 19 drivers for my PC.
Network adapter :
Qualcom Atheros AR8161 PCI-E gigabit Ethernet controller (NDIS 6.30)
is missing.

Are you saying that the package of 19 drivers does NOT include the wifi win-8 one?

And presumably you have installed the 19 drivers anyway?

I did google trawl using:

qualcomm atheros ar8161 pci-e gigabit ethernet controller (ndis 6.30) windows 8

and there are numerous "hits" about it… This one was top of the list when I "trawled"

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...

and it's rather interesting; and appears to offer a solution (courtesy of Toshiba support itself!).

Sorry about the lengthy link. Suggest you copy the whole thing into your browser to get to it. Or repeat my google trawl using the same search term/string.

This was the second hit in my "trawl"….

http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...

Appears to offer the drivers for win8; If you go that path… be very careful you aren't tricked into downloading/installing a lot of other stuff ("helpful" items, change of browser and so on) in the process. Do any installation of a driver package - manually; choose custom not default installation.

And set a restore point before you install any driver packages etc; not the least the one from immediately above, or similar "general drivers sources".

Many of the driver offerings often include a download manager; which you may have to accept. But it can be removed later (usually via the add/remove programmes in Control Panel). If the require an email address - either give them a fake one; or create one you can later abandon; mainly to avoid being spammed and or sent all manner of junk mail etc.

If a site offers to scan for drivers that "may require updating" - generally wiser to avoid that like the plague; and similarly if offering to scan as part of the win 8 provision - again avoid… Just get the driver package - or follow the Toshiba workaround in the first link above (which might be my preference in your situation).
