Did you get any recovery disks with the machine? I'd guess that the previous owner created these and then, as part of the process, got the option to remove the recovery partition to give extra storage. Nothing you can do about it if you want the recovery partition back. If you just want an extra partition on the machine then Windows 7 disk management will let you create that.

THANK YOU JOHNR. I FOLLOWED YOUR INSTRUCTIONS FOR LOCAL DRIVE D. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE FILES ARE NOT THERE. I DONT SUPPOSE YOU KNOW HOW I CAN INSTALL THE RIGHT ONES SO I CAN RUN IT TO INSTALL THESE, SO I CAN INSTALL UTILLERTY CD/DVD'S ETC, AND BURN CD/DVD'S ETC.IAM SORRY TO BE A PEST BUT I HAVE A MULTIPLE OF TERMINAL ILLNESSES, ONE OF WHICH IS CERIBLE GLOBAL ATROPHY, WHICH EFFECTS THE MEMORY. SO I HAVE BASICALLY REVERTED BACK TO A NOVICE USER. MY LITTLE QUOTE IS............THE DRUGS DONT WORK. ( THE VERVE.) I HOPE YOU CAN HELP AS THIS WOULD HELP ME ENORMASLEY, AND MAKE LIFE LOADS MORE COMFTABLE SO I CAN DO THINGS LIKE HAVING A BETTER LIFE WITH THE OUT-SIDE WOURLD. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND TIME.
